A musty smell is not just an unpleasant welcome-home moment. In many Australian homes, it is the first sign that moisture is sitting where it should not - under the floor, inside a wall cavity, in a roof space or behind stored belongings. Find where the odour is strongest

Use your sense of smell, but also look for practical clues. Clean affected areas safely
Once the moisture source is being addressed, clean surfaces that have collected mould or mildew. For a small, localised patch on a hard, non-porous surface, wear gloves and a suitable mask, ventilate the room, and clean with an appropriate mould cleaner according to its directions. Dry the area completely afterwards.
Do not scrub large mould growth dry, as this can spread spores through the room. Porous materials are harder to save. Damp cardboard, old rugs, particleboard furniture, ceiling insulation and heavily affected fabrics may need professional cleaning or replacement. It can be frustrating to throw out stored items, but keeping moisture-damaged materials in a closed wardrobe or garage often keeps the odour circulating.
Avoid relying on bleach for every situation. It may lighten visible mould on some surfaces, but it does not fix dampness within porous materials or behind walls. Mixing cleaning products is also unsafe. When in doubt, use one suitable product as directed and focus your effort on drying and ventilation.

Improve airflow without wasting energy

A sub-floor fan can dry the area below the house, but it cannot compensate for surface water constantly flowing towards the foundations.
Use odour absorbers only as a finishing step
After cleaning and drying, simple odour absorbers can help remove the last traces of stale smell from small enclosed spaces. Bicarbonate of soda, activated charcoal and moisture absorbers can be useful in cupboards, caravans, wardrobes and storage rooms. Replace them regularly and regard them as maintenance, not a cure.
Be cautious with dehumidifiers as a whole-house answer. They can be useful in a closed room during a short-term damp event, but they use electricity and need regular emptying or drainage. In a home with ongoing sub-floor moisture or poor ventilation, a dehumidifier may be treating the symptom while the actual source continues below.
When a musty smell needs a professional assessment
Arrange a closer inspection if the odour returns soon after cleaning, becomes stronger after rain, is concentrated near the floor, or comes with soft timber, visible mould or unexplained indoor humidity. These signs can indicate a concealed leak, poor drainage, inadequate sub-floor airflow or a moisture problem in the building fabric.
A proper assessment should look beyond the smell itself. It should consider water entry, drainage, airflow paths, existing vents, timber condition and the practical options for your home. This avoids spending money on temporary fixes that leave the underlying problem untouched.
