Vents are also a sensible starting point where there is no musty odour, no evidence of mould or rot, and inspections show dry soil and sound timbers. In this situation, adding fans may offer little extra value. The decision should follow the condition of the subfloor, not a one-size-fits-all rule.

When a subfloor fan is the better investment

Mechanical ventilation is generally more suitable when natural airflow is unreliable or the subfloor has clear signs of dampness. Where the issue is trapped humid air rather than water entry, ventilation becomes the key part of the solution.

Choosing a system that will actually perform
