Avoid regularly draining any battery completely. Deep discharging reduces the service life of many battery types, especially lead-acid batteries. A battery monitor is a worthwhile addition because voltage alone does not always show the true state of charge, particularly under load.
Battery capacity should match both your energy needs and your charging capacity. Adding a very large battery bank without enough solar to recharge it can leave you carrying extra weight with limited benefit. Installation details that protect your system
A dependable solar setup is about more than panels on the roof. Correct cable size, fusing, weatherproof connections and secure mounting all matter. Undersized cables cause voltage drop, which reduces charging performance and can create heat. Fuses and circuit protection should be installed in the right locations to protect cables and equipment if a fault occurs.
Roof penetrations need careful sealing to prevent water leaks. Panels must be fixed to suit the caravan roof construction and withstand highway wind loads. Loose cabling can rub through insulation over time, while poorly fitted connectors can allow moisture into the system.
